Saturday started cloudy and cold as 288 anxious anglers trekked to the Wild Horse State Recreation Area Visitor’s Center for the third annual Wild Horse Trout Derby.   The morning warmed up and anglers were catching lots of 17 to 20 inch fish, mostly using worms.
By mid afternoon fishing had slowed down, but the wind and snow had picked up sending many anglers heading for cover.  At 2:00 pm, Tommy Allen of Casper, Wyoming brought in the first fish to be measured and at 23 5/8 inches became the length to beat.
As anglers warmed up by the stove, the fish kept coming in to be measured.  Micah Sanchez of Spring Creek brought in a fish that measured 24 5/16 inches to replace Allen’s fish to the top of the board.
The last fish to be measured that was in the running was brought in by Aaron Coulson, which also measured 23 5/8 inches to tie Allen’s fish.  Using the fish’s weight as a tie breaker, sent Allen one more notch down the leader board to third place.
100% of the entry fees was paid out with Micah Sanchez of Spring Creek,  winning 1st place and taking home $1440, which was 50% of the  entry fees for the day.  Aaron Coulson of Spring Creek took 2nd winning $864, 30% of the days entry fees and Tommy Allen of Casper Wyoming, taking 3rd, walking away with $576 , which is 20% of the day’s entry fees.
Saturday was a whole different story as the sun came out from behind the clouds and the wind calmed down in the morning.  With 179 registered anglers on the ice, fishing started off a bit slow, but soon picked up with many limits of 17 to 20 inch fish being caught, mostly in shallow water.
Once again, Tommy Allen of Casper, Wyoming brought in the first fish to be measured and it came in at 24 ¼ inch.  But unlike Saturday, this fish held up and he took home $895 for 1st place on Sunday for a total of $1471 for the two day event!
“The fish that I entered and won with each day were also the first fish that I caught each day,” said Allen.  “My father in-law and I have been coming to this event for all three years.  He comes from Fallon, I come from Wyoming and we meet here and fish.”
Second was captured Sterling Skinner of Elko, Nevada with a prize of $537 dollars with a fish that was 23 7/8 inches, while Billy Baldwin of Battle Mountain, Nevada hung on to third taking home $358 for a fish that measured 23 9/16 inches.
Besides the payouts of the entry fees, there was added money and nine anglers took home either $50 in cash or a $50 gift card.
“This was a community event said,” said Vicky Ayres of the Wildhorse Estates Home Owners Association.  “We couldn’t have done it without the  generosity and help of a lot of businesses and volunteers and we can’t thank them enough. We will be placing an ad in the Elko Daily Free Press with everyone’s name.”
